True to life mysteries are always better than fiction and this mystery is definitely no exception. What seems like an unfortunate accident by an intoxicated student at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) - may have been the result of foul play. The student, who was missing for five days after a night of drinking was found dead in a secluded stairwell on campus. The student’s body was found by members of his own fraternity who wanted to assist in the search for the student. The county coroner immediately ruled the death happened on the night the student disappeared and it was an accident caused by alcohol and inhalation of his own vomit. The outdoor stairwell, though secluded, was attached to a very busy academic building used by hundreds of students each day and no one noticed the body until a search was organized. The student's family was skeptical of the coroner’s determination of death as well as the collaborating report of the local authorities and pushed a reporter to look into his death. The reporter – the author of this griping and hard to put down book, uncovered information that either was overlooked or kept hidden. The student, who was clean shaven on the night he was drinking and disappeared - why did he have a few days beard growth when his body was found? More interesting - why was there no alcohol found in his blood by the autopsy? Was he held hostage for a few days before he died? Did he die of foul play or possibly murdered and placed in the stairwell? When new information was uncovered, the family received approval (years after the death) to have the student’s body exhumed for a second autopsy. The second autopsy was performed by renowned Pathologist Cyril Wecht, who determined the student died of blunt force trauma to his head. However, this type of trauma did not appear to be consistent with a fall into the stairwell. The mystery kept getting deeper and deeper. Was his fraternity involved? Some of the student’s fraternity brothers were reported to be heavily involved in the sale of illegal drugs. Could that have played a part? Did the local authorities blow the investigation. I purchased the book, since I remember when this incident occurred. The book was well-written, except it was difficult to track the timeline and dates of the events occurring in the book. The writer needed to use more definitive dates as to when things occurred.
The book draws out more questions and really puts a focus on the priorities of the college, Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
The town of Indiana and IUP really look like they dropped the ball for this poor family in relation to the death of their son, brother and friend.
This was a hard story to read simply for the injustices committed to this young man. Marlene Gentilcore went above and beyond in her efforts to find out what happened to Jack Alan Davis Jr, and to provide some closure to a suffering brother and the victims family.
I was at IUP when this young man lost his life, walked right by that stairwell every day. This book isn't the best writing, but kudos to Ms. Gentilcore for bringing up a lot of questions that have never been answered. There were rumors flying all over campus at the time, but now that everyone involved is gone, grown up and off living lives, maybe someone, somewhere will read this book and decide to come forward with information. This is an interesting book.
Being a former IUP student myself, I am saddened to see that IUP is not acknowledging there was even a death so tragic as this one on campus. I was not even aware of this book until a fellow classmate of mine told me about it. I read this book in 3 days. I could not put it down. Seeing myself pass the stairwell and knowing exactly where it is on campus put myself back there and thinking I should have known this had happened. Supposedly there is a plaque there to honor Jack Allen Davis, Jr. but I don't remember seeing it. Next time I visit Indiana I will absolutely go to the plaque to pay my respects and think of Jack and his family.
The book puts you in the authors shoes, if you don't know anything about the case it's a good read. If you do know anything about it, it may be repetitive. I would recommend this to any and all IUP students and Alumni. I wish this case was closed for good and the people who killed him are brought to justice, but as you will read in the book, that hasn't happened yet. I hope someone out there is brave and willing enough to come out and say who did this. Until then I will think about this event often and spread awareness of Jack Allen Davis, Jr.
As the old cliche goes, it was difficult to put down this book. Ms. Gentilcore certainly did her homework, and thank goodness Jack's brother persevered in this investigation. It's hard to imagine that something as tragic as Jack's murder/death has gone unpunished in this great country of ours. Shame on the persons who have never come forward with valuable information AND the "professionals" who didn't do their jobs correctly from the beginning of this tragedy. Thankfully, there were a few good people who tried to do the right thing. God bless Jack and his family.
Some books grab you and won't let you go. They will torment you as you try to sleep. Some books will lure you all day as you tend to daily tasks. You know the adventure awaits or the mystery needs more investigation to be solved. "Justice Wanted" is such a book for me. I don't allow myself to read it during the day, because I would get nothing done, but at night I read it until I can't keep my eyes open any longer and then this mystery haunts my dreams. Ms Gentilcore takes us on a sine wave tour of investigative reporting. Thanks for the roller coaster ride Ms Gentilcore.
I attended IUP in the fall of 1987, I remember Jack's story as if it was yesterday. I never believed what they say happened to him. I was a Freshman and my sister was a a junior so she would meet me for lunch at the fountain in front of where Jack was found everyday. We were both sickened at the thought of him laying there while we ate lunch and didn't know it. Thank you for shedding light on what really happened.
